I was a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital from 1995 until I retired early from the NHS in 2016. I helped establish the Peninsula Medical School including leading on the development of the year 5 undergraduate curriculum. I was the Medical Director at the Trust from 2009 to 2013.
I won the National Clinical Informatics Leadership award in 2014 from the Chief Clinical Informatics Officer’s network. It was out of this interest in health informatics, that I founded Ultramed Ltd with Alan Sanders.
In 2019 we won the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland’s Innovation award for MyPreOp®. In 2020 I was appointed as a Fellow on the NHS Innovation Accelerator national program https://nhsaccelerator.com/fellows-and-mentors/paul-upton/
As well as securing grant funding in Cornwall, Ultramed raised 300% of its target fund raise on Crowdcube. We have also secured Innovate UK funding.
